Through the Master in Economics, the Institute has helped train several generations of national and foreign economists with a high degree of specialization, who have been overseen significant economic transformations –from the government to the private sector– that have led to greater development and well-being. This program also provides a strong academic background for those wishing to pursue a PhD, as graduates regularly demonstrate outstanding performance at the best universities in Chile, the United States and Europe. Since 2002, when our PhD program in Economics was established, Master’s students may complement their training through the PhD offered by the Institute, continuing on a high-level academic path.

Objectives

To provide a strong background in economic theory and rigorous tools for analytic and empirical work, with a special emphasis on the problems that affect developing countries.

Candidate Profile

The Master in Economics is designed for students of the Sciences who wish to obtain a strong training in Economics, both in theory and applied research. Applicants must have either a Bachelor’s degree in Economic Sciences or a related discipline, or another academic or professional degree with a level and content of studies equivalent to those necessary to earn the required Bachelor’s degree. Applicants are expected to present documentation certifying excellence in their performance while obtaining their academic and/or professional degree. They must also demonstrate adequate knowledge in at least one of the following areas of studies: Economic Theory, Quantitative Methods and Statistics. A strong candidate is one who has studied Economics or a related field, from a prestigious university, with some relevant professional experience and knowledge of the English language in accordance with program requirements. The most important selection criterion is academic excellence demonstrated as a student of Economic Sciences. It is essential for students of any other discipline to demonstrate academic excellence and be willing to undertake a leveling program of study designed especially for each student’s needs. This program generally consists of some Bachelor’s degree courses.
