Description

The MHM contributes an environmental approach to the study of organizational processes within the territory. With this purpose, it analyses the influence of environmental impacts on local, metropolitan and regional development, as well as the political and social processes that impact urban and territorial transformations. It concentrates its teaching on the study and intervention of the territory. Of particular interest is the interdisciplinary debate on regional development and the effects of globalization on this process, together with the discussion regarding the instruments used to plan, manage and evaluate environmental impacts, seeking to produce greater urban and territorial sustainability.

Objectives

At the end of this program, students will acquire: a conceptual and interpretative framework for environmental problems, policies, plans and projects, and their effects on urban and territorial development; up-to-date knowledge of urban and territorial sustainability, including aspects of urban ecology, biodiversity and climate change; contemporary tools for the creation, design and evaluation of plans (normative and indicative) for territorial and environmental legislation; a logical and interpretative framework on aspects of territorial governance.

Candidate Profile

The Master’s programs of the Institute of Urban and Territorial Studies of Universidad Católica de Chile, Master in Urban Development (MDU) and Master in Human Settlements and the Environment (MHM), seek to train professionals and academics of excellence, capable of directing practical work and applied research teams using an interdisciplinary approach for the sustainable management of territories. Both programs pay attention to the economic, social, political and cultural factors that influence the creation and sustainable management of urban and rural settlements. Thus, professionals from the Social Sciences, Earth Sciences, the Humanities, Management, Education, Architecture, Design, the Arts and other related disciplines are all welcome. The program’s courses offer a practical and theoretical approach, and therefore students must demonstrate their capacity to comprehend specific territorial problems, as well as their analytical capabilities for creating a proposal using research within a theoretical framework. Traditionally, Master’s programs at the IEUT select students from all over Chile, as well as a significant number of students of other nationalities. This diversity has enriched the theses produced by both programs in terms of the variety of territories these theses have focused on. In particular, in recent years the Institute has favored the development of theses related to Latin America and the Caribbean.
