Description

The MDU offers a comprehensive approach to the study of the transformation, growth and urban life of cities. Emphasizing the influence of morphological dimensions on economic, social, political and cultural dynamics, this program focuses on the study and intervention of contemporary cities and their territories, operating through urban policies, plans and projects. It is offered by Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile’s Institute of Urban and Territorial Studies.

Objectives

To train proactive professionals who are aware of their field, with an up-to-date knowledge of public policies, planning and cultural studies. By the end of the program, students will have: a conceptual and interpretative framework for the phenomena and actors that determine urban and territorial development; up-to-date knowledge of urban culture, planning and management; contemporary tools for the development, design and evaluation of urban projects at the local, metropolitan and regional scale; knowledge of different experiences in the evaluation of public and private policies, plans and projects.

Candidate Profile

The Master’s programs of the Institute of Urban and Territorial Studies of Universidad Católica de Chile, Master in Urban Development (MDU) and Master in Human Settlements and the Environment (MHM), seek to train professionals and academics of excellence, capable of directing practical work and applied research teams using an interdisciplinary approach for the sustainable management of territories. Both programs pay attention to the economic, social, political and cultural factors that influence the creation and sustainable management of urban and rural settlements. Thus, professionals from the Social Sciences, Earth Sciences, the Humanities, Management, Education, Architecture, Design, the Arts and other related disciplines are all welcome. The program’s courses offer a practical and theoretical approach, and therefore students must demonstrate their capacity to comprehend specific territorial problems, as well as their analytical capabilities for creating a proposal using research within a theoretical framework. Traditionally, Master’s programs at the IEUT select students from all over Chile, as well as a significant number of students of other nationalities. This diversity has enriched the theses produced by both programs in terms of the variety of territories these theses have focused on. In particular, in recent years the Institute has favored the development of theses related to Latin America and the Caribbean.
